Our goal is to build the capacity of our frontline partners to create long-term conservation solutions, empowering them to become leaders in their own communities and building a brighter future for Sumatra’s forests, wildlife, and people. “Long-term, sustainable change must come from within communities.” explains Helen Buckland, our CEO. “We’re committed to supporting those who are already working tirelessly to protect Sumatra’s precious rainforests.”
We are incredibly proud of our ongoing relationships with our incredible partners, like Yayasan Orangutan Sumatera Lestari, also known as the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC)
Co-founded by SOS in 2001, OIC shares our vision for a thriving Sumatra. Over the past 20 years, OIC has grown from a small team of volunteers to a broad-based field operation working across the Leuser Ecosystem and Batang Toru. Their projects are diverse and impactful, ranging from vital forest regeneration and human-wildlife conflict mitigation to the development of sustainable livelihoods and support for wildlife law enforcement.
OIC has made remarkable strides in forest restoration. Over the past year, they cultivated 55,000 seedlings representing 34 diverse tree species. But their commitment goes beyond planting. OIC diligently maintains these trees, combating threats to their health and replacing any that don’t survive.
Last year alone, they replanted 35,000 saplings across 25 hectares of previously reforested areas, ensuring these vital ecosystems thrive. Thanks to OIC’s effective cultivation and maintenance practices, these replanted saplings boast an impressive 80% survival rate.
Last year we supported OIC to actively manage 70 hectares across two critical sites: the Selamanya Hutan restoration area and the Singkil Peat Swamp Forest, a globally recognised haven for orangutans. This achievement is truly worth celebrating!
By continuing to partner with dedicated local organisations like OIC, we can build a powerful network for change, securing a thriving future for people and nature alike. Stay tuned to discover more about our other inspiring partners and the collaborative work we’re doing together.
